Scholarships

The MECE program award a number of merit-based scholarships. All admitted students are automatically considered for scholarship support. The awards vary in amount and are determined by geographical diversity, unique work experience, the student’s academic record and involvement in college life.

MECE Focus Areas

The MECE program at Rice University offers courses in six focus areas.

Computer Engineering

Create the next generation of hardware by designing digital and analog integrated circuits and printed circuit boards.

Wireless Systems

Invent the future of wireless by focusing on any aspect from theoretical foundations to
at-scale field trials

Data Science

We use digital signal processing algorithms to collect and understand the structure in data, looking for compelling patterns, telling a story.

Quantum Engineering

Utilize cutting-edge photonic, electronic, and magnetic technologies to control quantum materials for quantum computation, simulation, communication, and sensing.

Computer Vision

Explore cutting-edge algorithms and hardware to perform visual tasks such as object recognition that will enable fully autonomous systems.

Neuroengineering

Gain a fundamental understanding of coding and computation in the human brain and develop technology that can Improve lives by restoring and extending its capabilities.

Capstone and Courses

Capstone projects form the core of the MECE degree by engaging students in the design, assembly, and testing of a state-of-the-art product. Projects span the second and third semesters of the program and are performed in teams. To prepare, students take a foundations course that provides background on their particular focus area.

Why an MECE?

A professional master’s degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering can enhance and strengthen a career in industry. The degree is designed for the recent graduate or business professional who wishes to expand his or her engineering knowledge, without completing a thesis. The degree emphasizes practical aspects of engineering, combined with management and communication coursework, allowing graduates to rapidly advance in their careers.

Where MECE Graduates Go

MECE graduates have ended up in a diverse range of companies in different industries, such as: Schlumberger, Lockheed Martin, Intel, Dell, Intuit, HP, Apple, Cyberonics

Best Paying Master's Degree

Master’s degrees in ECE are in Monster.com’s list of top 10 best-paying master’s degrees, with median salaries of $130,000, more than the listed median for other engineering majors, including computer science.

Located in Houston

Houston is the most diverse city in the country and is home to a growing number of tech companies, with MarketWatch stating that “Houston is winning the competition to establish tech hubs in Texas”.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the application requirements?

Refer to the Graduate Admissions page for a list of application requirements

I already have a graduate degree. Can I still apply?

Yes. We welcome applications from students with graduate degrees.

Can I apply for more than one program in ECE, or more than one graduate program at Rice?

Yes. However, separate applications are required for each program.

When is the application available?

Applications are available on our around September 1, and are available until the application deadline. The deadline will be published on the admission pages

My school does not use a 4.0 scale. How do I report my GPA?

The application allows you to submit your GPA and the scale used at your institution.

Do I need to take the GRE and can I take it more than once?

All applicants are required to submit a current GRE score. In addition, international students are required to submit either an IELTS or a TOEFL current score.

You can take the GRE more than once and we will “super score” your test, taking your best scores from each section.
